Heartline Podcast • Episode 28 Derek Steele
Addiction is a big problem in the US, but how does a 10 year old kid become an addict? We know that children have to progress through developmental stages—they learn to crawl, then walk, they learn to trust or not to trust and they learn if the world is a safe or dangerous place by the secure and loving presence of significant others. Derek Steele learned a lot more than most kids his age. He grew in stages, too: he drank alcohol at 8, smoked pot at 10 and was fully addicted to ecstasy, meth and cocaine by 16. His book, Addict at 10, explores addiction, excess and the long road to recovery. He’s here today to tell his amazing story.
