I have to get straight A’s or my parents will be so disappointed in me. If I’m not thin and pretty, I’ll never find a husband. I’ll never measure up to my dad’s standards, it’s impacted my confidence in everything I do ---I never feel capable. Think I’m kidding with this. I’m not. As a counselor, I hear things like this daily--- sadly, it drives the behavior of most of us out there---what’s the problem---perfectionism.
In a culture where we’re all obsessed with our accomplishments, success, and looks, have we shifted our source of value to be solely about what we DO instead of who we are? Where does this all begin? Is it the fault of our parents---setting the standards for our performance too high? Or are some of our standards self- imposed? Is there such a thing as healthy perfectionism? And when does perfectionism cross the line into being neurotic? We’re gonna talk about all this-- and more on today’s show--- with my guest Dr Richard Winter. His book Perfecting Ourselves to Death, by Tyndale, can be purchased on my website. You can also win a copy of the book, and a $25 gift card by posting an interesting comment on the ask Rita link, be sure to include your email!
